The flowers at the Taean Tulip Festival

For most of us who were born and raised in a tropical country, we are sometimes oblivious to the presence of flowers all around us because they are there all year round. We can appreciate it anytime we want because there is no such thing as season for flowers. But when I started living in South Korea, the cold winter days deprive me of the sight of green luscious trees and colorful flowers. At the start of the cold days, all of a sudden, colors of nature do not exist. That is why at the start of the spring season, I always get too excited because finally, dead trees and dull colors will be replaced by green scenery and colorful flowers of different types and varieties. The change of the season from winter to spring is a symbol of festivity, and what better way to celebrate it than to organize various spring festivals.

During springtime, there are festivals all over Korea like the Yeouido Spring Flower Festival and International Horticulture in Goyang, but if there’s one Spring Festival in Korea you shouldn’t miss, it’s the Taean Tulip Festival because it is recognized by the World Tulip Summit Society as one of the top 5 tulip festivals in the world, yes folks, we are talking about the world. With over 1.5 million colorful tulips all over the garden, it has earned the respect of the world.

Windmill of Netherlands featured at the Taean Tulip Festival

At Taean tulips festival, you will see varieties of tulips that come in different colors and sizes. In a human height level, your eyes will show you a garden of thousands of tulips. They were planted according to variety and color. When put together, you will see a spectacular combination of tulips arranged neatly that it looks like the flowers are performing some sort of a dance especially when the wind blows them. It's such a refreshing sight to look at. Everywhere you go, there are tulips all around as if waving at every onlookers passing by.

Tulips of different varieties and colors

At some point, I was intrigued by how oddly they arranged the flowers according to colors. I decided to look at it on a higher perspective. They put up this mound in the middle of the garden, it looks like a little volcano for me, but not scary because of the flowers. People usually climb up to the peak of the mound to see the whole area.

A small mound at the middle of the garden

Looking at the beauties from up there, the odd arrangement of the colors made a little bit of sense to me. Some color formations are round, curve, straight lines and some were intentionally arranged to project an image. I was so sure that there’s a message behind the flower arrangement, some kind of an image which can only be appreciated at higher point of view.

Flower formation from the top view

God knows what other images are projected by the arrangement of tulips in the Garden. I don’t have any equipment that could let me take photos at higher perspective, but I enjoyed the vast garden of tulips anyhow. I just thought that it really takes a lot of effort to come up with a magnificent garden like that, and with a concept.

Concept of the garden

Aside from Tulips, the presence of Cherry blossoms planted at the corner makes the garden more magical. Although some petals have already withered, there are some remaining cherry blossom flowers enough to compliment with the colorful tulips. There are also digitalis, lupine, orchids, lilies and most of all, canola. There’s an area where all you can see are yellow beauties of canola flower. It was my first time to see a vast garden of canola in one area.

In the presence of the canola flowers

There are also other activities in the festival like a mini concert. There are also food booths if you want to go on a food trip. Various Korean street food like ttokboki and hoteok are available. If you want to buy tulips seedlings, they have a market available for you. There are also souvenir booths where you can buy products like bracelets, jewelries, shirts, etc. They are not necessarily connected to Tulips Festivals, but people do buy anyway.

Entrance to the Taean Tulip Festival is pretty cheap, you can check on the board below for the prices.

How to get there?

At first I was intimidated to go there because they said it’s a very remote area. But I think it’s not that difficult to go there. You can take the express bus to Taean from any intercity bus terminal in Korea. Fare is based on the location where you are departing. Once you arrived at Taean Bus Terminal, you can take Bus Number 700 and get off at Sinon-ri. From there, you can walk around 10 to 15 minutes. The walkway to the garden is very narrow, you might need to be very careful walking on that road because you will be sharing it with a lot of cars.

This year 2017, the festival will run from April 13, 2017 up to May 10, 2017.

The Legend of the Blue Sea (푸른바다의 전설) is the newest Korean drama craze in the world of Hallyu. It stars Lee Min Ho and Jun Ji Hyun and the story is all about a mermaid named Sae-Wa played by Jun Ji Hyeon who falls in love with the son of Joseon noble family Dam-ryeong played by Lee Min Ho during the Joseon dynasty. Then they find each other in the modern times as SIm Chung (Jun Ji Hyun) and Heon Joon-jae( Lee Min Ho), a doppelganger of Dam-ryeong from the Joseon dynasty and he works as a skilled conman. As their world intertwined in the modern world, Joon-jae shows Shim Chung the ways of the new world and later on find themselves in love with each other again. It is another love story about two people coming from two different worlds trying to fight the hurdles between them. Will love still wins despite the fact that Shim Chung finds it hard to keep up living with humans in the modern weird world? Will Heon Joon-jae can use his skills as a conman to trick the world and gets in his way to save and love Shim Chung? This Korean drama will show once again that love will always win.

The drama has been shot at different locations in Korea and even outside the country. They filmed some underwater scenes in Palau, the casts and crews also went to Spain to film in A Coruna, Lugo, Ribadeo and Castell de Santa Florentina. However, the interesting shooting locations are of course the places they featured in Seoul and other parts of Korea. What made it interesting is the fact that the filming locations they selected are tourist spots. So if ever you are going to Korea, you might want to include some of these places in your itinerary.

1. Pocheon Art Valley

From Episode 2, there's a scene where Dam-ryeong shows up on his boat floating in a very beautiful and calm water to meet Sae Wa after hundreds of lanterns appeared all over the area. This location is at Pocheon Art Valley.

To go to this location, take an intercity bus and get off at Pocheon Bus Terminal (포천터미널), then from there, you can take bus number 67 or 67-1 and get off at Pocheon Art Valley Bus Stop.

2. Gangnam

When Sim Chung first set her foot in Seoul in Epsiode 3, she's wandering at Gangnam, the most sophisticated and expensive district of Seoul. This is a place where you see corporate people busy walking in the street, enjoy shopping and fashionable Koreans.

To get yourself lost in the Gangnam district, when in Seoul, you can take Subway Line number 2 (Green Line) and get off at Gangnam Station.

3. Aqua Planet of 63 Building

To continue her search for Joon-jae, Sim Chung went to Aqua Planet 63 in Episode 3 of the series. She had her buffet in the aquarium and she became an instant star of the mermaid show.

If you want to visit Aqua Planet 63, take Subway Line Number 1 or Blue Line in Seoul, get off at Daebang Station and go to Exit 6. You can either take Bus number 11 or take the free shuttle bus to the 63 Building.

4. Boseong Green Tea Plantation

A scene taken from outside of Seoul. In the Episode 4 of this series, Sae Wa is seen walking at the green tea plantation during the first snow of winter.

Boseong is actually far from Seoul, it is located at Jeollanam-do. It's address is at 763-67, Nokcha-ro, Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do 전라남도 보성군 보성읍 녹차로 763-67. You can take the intercity bus from Seoul Central City Bus Terminal (Express Bus Terminal Station, Subway Line 3, 7 & 9), take an express bus bound for Boseong Intercity Bus Terminal. From Boseong Terminal, take a local bus bound for Yulpo and get off at Daehan Dawon Bus Stop. Travel time is about 5 hours.

5. Yeouido Hangang River Park

Another scene taken in Seoul is at Yeouido hangang River Park. Annually, every October, a fireworks festival is held in this park. Joon Jae and Sim Chung witnessed the fireworks at this park located in the heart of Seoul

It is very easy to go to Yeouido Hangang Park when you are in Seoul. Take Subway Line number 5, get off at Yeouinaru Station and go to either Exit 2 or 3.

There are several scenes taken at the Hangang Park. In Episode 8, Heo Jeon Jae met Sim Chung at this park. We visited the place and made our own version of the scene at the exact spot.

This is also a place where Sim Cheong scavenged for her potential dinner only to get interrupted by a fellow merman.

6. Namsan Seoul Tower

This tower appeared several times in the series. If you are wondering what is that well and beautifully lit tower you see on the background, that is N Seoul tower. If you are in downtown Seoul, it is impossible you would not see it in daytime and in night time. In Epsiode 5, Sim Chung and Joon Jae supposed to meet here during the first snow.

It is easy to go to Namsan Tower, you can read my previous post about N Seoul Tower HERE for the instruction on how to go there and for the fun activities you can do.

7. Vivaldi Park Ski World

Another scene shot outside Seoul is at Vivaldi Park Ski World in Hongcheon, Gangwondo province. In episode 6, the couple is enjoying the ski park after Sim Chung requested to go to a place where there's snow.

To go to Vivaldi Park Ski World, from Seoul Sangbong Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, take a bus to Hongcheon Bus Terminal. From Hongcheon, take Bus No. 70-1 or 70-2 to Vivaldi Park (travel time: approx. 1hr 30min)

8. National Palace Museum Of Korea

In episode 9, Joon Jae met up with Si Ah in the museum to see the relics they found in the house of Dam Ryeong. That museum is in the National Palace Museum of Korea.

It is easy to go there when you are in Seoul. Take Subway line number 3 and Get off at Gyeongbokgung Station. Go to Exit 5 and walk for about 5 minutes from there.

9. Myeongdong

A lot of the scenes were shot at Myeongdong, one of the famous shopping places in Seoul. The exterior of the house of Heo Joon Jae is in this place. It is located near the exit 3 of Myeongdong Station. When you go out of the Exit 3, you have to pass by the Pacific Hotel, turn right and walk straight up to Sogong-ro 4 gil street. The front door of the house is located near the passage way to the Namsan Tower.

The scene where Sim Chung was kidnapped by Ma Dae Young was also shot in Myeongdong. The big Christmas tree is located at the Shinsegae Mall in Myeongdong.

And in front of Shinsegae mall in Myeongdong, you can also see this Christmas lights which arched the walkway.

To go there, just go out of Exit 4 of Myeongdong station, walk straight for 5 minutes until you reach Shinsegae Mall.

10. Riverland Spa

The whole Sauna scene was shot in Riverland Spa. To go there, you can take Seoul Subway Line 2 and get off at Gangbyeon Station.

Jusangjeolli Cliff (주상절리) is Nature’s Masterpiece of Jeju

What makes Jeju really beautiful is the fact that it is an island made by nature. Who would have thought that a disastrous eruption of magma that formed in the sea that happened more than 1 million years ago has now turned into an island inhabited by thousands of Koreans nowadays? Nature has a lot of masterpieces in Jeju, and one of them is the Jusangjeolli Cliff (주상절리) which is located in the Seogwipo City.

The Jusangjeolli cliff

Jusangjeolli or columnar joints is a rocky cliff, and the reason why it is called by its name is because the rocks in the cliff are formed into polygonal columns. This columnar joints is about 2 km long which runs from the coast of Jungmun-dong up to the Daepo-dong.

Big waves beating against the cliff and the rocks

If you will look at it at one glance, you may think that these joints are man made. The columns are perfectly arranged, some have 5 sides, some have 6 sides and it formed as if some architect or engineers have planned it so it will look that way. The truth is, the nature created this awesome cliff. Some 140,000 to 250,000 years ago, the lava flowed from the Nokhajiak Scoria cone. When the lava cooled down, it was solidified and then these polygonal columns were formed to make an amazing cliff.

View from the trail
When we went to the Jusangjeolli cliff, the waves were so big, and everytime it beats against the rocks and the cliffs, it’s so beautiful, it was like we were watching a show that only nature can do. The cool breeze and the sound of the splashing wave made our visit even more memorable and fun.
At the end of the trail, an ahjumma selling raw seafood is waiting for the hungry visitors. She’s actually cleaning them in front of the customers. While the waves and the columnar joints were busy entertaining the visitors, she has a show of her own too.

Ahjumma cleaning her raw seafood

Entrance to the Jusangjeolli Cliff is only 2,000 KRW per person. It is open all year round, from sunrise to sunset. It is located at this address:

The War Memorial Museum of Korea (전쟁기념관)

The war memorial of Korea

Just recently, I had the chance to visit War Memorial Museum in Seoul. I had been to the War Memorial Park which is located just outside the building of the museum for the nth time, but never had the chance to enter the war museum. Before, I don’t understand why there’s a need to have a war museum. I just thought it’s too violent and unusual, but things had changed when I visited the Indepence Hall of Korea in Cheonan. I now understand the information that war museums would like to convey. The Independence Hall of Korea showed what happened during the Japanese-Korean war, but The War Memorial Museum in Seoul is all about the North and South Korean war as well as war against the Chinese communist. I just realized that South Korea has been through a lot of war in its history, no wonder why they require Korean men to undergo military service, maybe in preparation of whatever kind of war that may come to them in the future.

Our tour guide, a Korean guy named Jaemin of Loving Korea, in his military uniform, diligently explained to us what happened during the North and South Korean war. I was late during the tour, so I think I missed a lot of his explanations and fun (or not) facts about the war that has transpired ages ago. The war museum is a huge building, or should I say a huge military history museum.

The tourists with the tour guide

The museum is divided into different halls. I shared the tour with several other foreign nationalities and Jaemin took us to the Exhibiton 6.25 room and to the adjacent halls which hold different documentations, statues, interactive demonstration and dioramas of what really happened during the war. We also watched a 4D documentary footage in black and white showing the main battles and the events that happened during the war. It was a terrifying footage because we didn’t just see it, we also felt it. The cold, the eerie surrounding, the fear and the struggle, I felt it by just watching the documentary.

Actual photos captured during the war

There are also activities and interactive amenities inside the museum, it’s still all about the war but it will help you learn in the fun way. The actual photos, maps, artifacts and footages are all over the hall, you could not miss single information if you will just take time to check it all.

Statues depicting the war

The good thing about the War Memorial Museum in Korea is that, you can enter for FREE. Our tour guide, Jaemin, said that their government spent a lot of money just to establish a museum like this because it will help reminds Koreans about the war that happened before. However, this may look like a history museum, but it is still relevant nowadays seeing that South Korea is still not in good terms with North Korea. In short, the war is not yet over. Although there’s an on going negotiations and both countries are currently in agreement with establishing a Demilitarized zone, one single mistake may ignite the fire between the two warring nations. The way Jaemin described the ordeals in the Demilitarized zone, I can say that the war between North and South Korea is still on going. The war museum is the living reminder of the real struggle of this war.

Interactive amenities at the war memorial museum

I’m glad I was able to enter the museum. Just outside the building, there are other things you can see. Aside from the statues, buildings and different symbolism, you can see the display of different military equipment. If you want see what’s outside the war memorial park, you can CLICK here to visit my previous post about it.

Reading “No Couches in Korea” on a Couch in Korea

$
0
0

I received a copy of “No Couches in Korea” from the author himself Kevin Maher who sent it all the way from Macau. As soon as I received the book, I immediately opened it and read the first few parts of the book. The premise of the book is all about the journey of an English teacher in Korea in the year 1996 when English language was still new to Koreans and white foreigners were being stared at like a star in a circus. I was excited to read the book because I know as a migrant worker in Korea, I can maybe relate to it. While I find myself ironically reading the book in the comfort of a couch in Korea, I read some parts of the book during a subway ride, and everytime I read something about Koreans, of how the characters described them in the bad light, I felt like reading them aloud in the public just so Koreans know how foreigners generally think of them.

However, as the setting of the story was in the mid 1990s, I didn’t put a high expectation on the book because I know for sure that in the past two decades, Korea has changed a lot. Although there are some parts of the book that made me think I experienced the same thing, I found most of the details in this book about living in South Korea in the 90s interesting but not applicable in the modern age. I guess Maher has intended market for this book, and although I am a foreign worker here in South Korea, I just think I am not a market of this book. If I remove all the dramas and love story, picking only the parts that detail the character’s journey in South Korea, I guess English teachers in South Korea would find this helpful. This will give the overview to the first timers of what they will about to experience as soon as they arrive in South Korea. But then again, this was in the 90s, I don’t know how much has changed since that time.

The book only features two major places in South Korea, the Busan and Seoul. Other places like Seoraksan and Gyeongju were mentioned but not really detailed. If there are other places mentioned, then I may have missed it, which means this book is not for the wanderlusts. I’ve been to Busan twice and I’ve been to some of the places Kevin mentioned like Haeundae Beach and the Nampodong Street. I must say that while he did not really talk that much of the must visit places in Busan, his story makes me want to go to Busan again and check out the places and bars he mentioned especially the Blue Note. Next time I go to Busan, No Couches In Korea will surely comes first to my mind which means the book did  a great job introducing Busan to me and maybe to the other readers. However, it would be good if instead of the work dramas and ordeals with roommates and the little western community, the author could have allotted more pages about his experience in other places aside from Busan.

As I’ve said, the setting of the story was in the mid 90s, so I considered this book a history book rather than a guide book because some nuances in the Korean culture have changed already in the past two decades. For example, they don’t call it Pusan anymore but Busan, the travel time from Busan to Seoul is no longer 6 hours, Koreans are no longer staring at the foreigners and so much more. But I must say I’m glad I read the book because Kevin’s account about the 1990s Busan could probably not be seen in any Korean History books. It was an actual event, actual people and actual places narrated in the perspective of a foreigner. While you can’t use this book as a guide for living in Korea in this era, it’s a perfect manual for somebody who wants to know the event that took place in the city in the earlier years.

Overall, I think it’s an interesting read. Although it’s not 100 percent all about Korea, I still find it interesting because reading the book brought me to the time no one in this era would have known.  It’s like making a pathway to an unknown street. I rate this book 7/10 for an effort to illustrate Korea before the kpop, k dramas and hallyu wave entered the scene.

Philippine Lanterns Shine Bright at Seoul Lantern Festival (서울빛초롱축제) 2016

The annual celebration of lantern festival in Seoul, South Korea has finally ended for this year 2016. It was a month long display of bright and colorful lanterns at Cheonggyecheon Stream. Every year, the Seoul Lantern Festival opens every first Friday of the Month of November and ends on the third Sunday of the same month. There were various displays of eye enticing lanterns from the Cheonggyecheon Plaza all the way up to the Supyo Bridge. It took me one hour to check out all the lanterns in the 1.2 km stream and it was indeed an epic sight to look at.

The theme for this year’s Seoul Lantern Festival was “Lightened Hangang River Where History Flows”. It’s a homage to the infamous Hangang River, or “Large River”, which is considered to be the lifeline of Seoul . The lanterns they exhibited were all about the historical, cultural and the stories surrounding the Han River.

There were displays of lanterns about Seoul’s surrounding areas in the past and during the Neolithic ages. The lanterns served as the life size dioramas of what Seoul looks like in the past and how people lived during the pre historic era.

Some interesting stories, legends, beliefs and folklores from the past were also featured in the exhibit. So basically, it’s all about telling the history of Seoul and the Han River in the guise of fabulous lanterns and colorful lights.

Aside from that, there were lanterns from some parts of the world too. I saw one from Japan, from China and of course, from the Philippines. The Philippine proudly showcased its colorful Parol shining brightly on top of colorful lanterns. People were so amazed with the Philippine lanterns as it looked jolly and attractive.

There are also various activities at the Gwantonggyo Bridge and Gwanggyo Bridge Gallery. The hands on activities included were floating of wishing lanterns, writing of wishes at the Hanji, and a lot more. There were booths in the area where people can buy the materials needed to participate in the event.

If you wish to experience Seoul lantern Festival next year, make sure you visit Seoul in the month of November.

Korean Girl Group 2NE1 Has Officially Disbanded

Can you still remember the first time you heard FIRE on the radio? Or the last time you danced to the tune of I DON’T CARE? The Korean girl group responsible for making those songs famous is now officially disbanding. Yes, it’s a painful truth, but members of the group CL, Sandara Park, Park Bom and Minzy decided to go on their separate ways. According to YG, CL and Sandara Park have signed separate solo contracts. Minzy left 2NE1 and Park Bom has not resigned yet with YG.

This is the official statement of the 2NE1’s agency, YG:

“2NE1’s exclusive contract expired in May 2016, and with Minzy leaving 2NE1, we have come to the decision to officially disband after extensive discussion with the remaining members.
“As 2NE1 was YG’s official girl group for seven years, we cannot begin to express how we feel, but we determined that it was too difficult to continue. Rather than waiting an unknown amount of time for 2NE1’s next promotions, we have decided to focus on the members’ solo activities.
“We sincerely thank all the fans both in Korea and abroad that have loved the group and their music for all this time.
“We would like to officially announce that after last May, we resigned with CL and Sandara Park. However, unfortunately, there is no new contract with Park Bom.”

Outstanding Pictures of SUPERMOON as Seen From South Korea

The SUPERMOON which appeared yesterday has been the talk of the town and in the social media. Everybody is making a BIG deal about it because this is a rare event on planet earth. Supermoon is the same moon that appears every night in the sky, except that at this particular moment of time, the moon is closer to earth. If the moon is closer to earth, it is 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than the usual moon we see everyday. The reason why everybody suddenly turns into sky gazers is because Supermoon appears rare in a lifetime. Last night's Supermoon was one of the closest distance between the moon and earth, the last time this happened was in year 1948. So if you missed it like I do, we could not probably see the same phenomenon any time soon.

However, there's technology and digital camera, and there are good photographers who were able to capture the photo of Supermoon. If you missed it and if you like to see it again, I will share the photos with the permission of the photographers here.

This one was taken by Ms. Lois Patol in Suwon. She said it was cloudy that night and there's no way to take a good photo of the moon. She waited for one hour until the sky became clearer and she never wasted  single time to take a good shot of the Supermoon. It's still autumn here in Korea, therefore she included the fall foliage silhouetting their pretty pointed leaves against the bright moon in the sky.

Photographer Mherl Mharl Teano Jara suddenly became poetic after he captured the beautiful moon with his camera. God knows how long he waited to get a good shot of the moon. He started at 8 pm, but because the sky was cloudy, it's almost impossible to see the moon that night at Cheongna area of South Korea. He was determined to see the moon, he obviously could not stand by outside looking up the sky because it was too cold last night, probably a close to zero temperature, but what he did was, he checked once in a while if the moon has appeared. Luckily, at around 11:50, the moon peeked for him and this is what he got!

This is another interesting photo captured by Rey Zamora at Siheung around 7:50. The night was young and the sky is clear, he braved through the cold weather and finally captured a simple but detailed image of the moon.

Photographer Allan Lafuente took this photo in Incheon City. With an ISO of 3100, Aperture of f/8 and shutter speed of 1/60 sec @200 mm (Image area DX), he was able to come up with this 3D-ish image of the supermoon.

Another photographer from Incheon City took a photo of the Supermoon in a different set up. It was too cloudy at Incheon city that night, so he decided to include other elements like this leafless tree because Fall Season is coming. He said that this is a ghostly shadow of the Supermoon.

So there you go, despite the cloudy, dark and cold night, they still managed to capture the Supermoon for our memory's sake. Hopefully another Supermoon will happen soon, that time with a good weather and a clear sky because looking at the moon at the closest possible distance is an opportunity we should not miss.

Feeling Wizard at the Hogsmeade Café in Daegu

It was the last day of the year 2016 when I decided to do something magical. I’ve been a muggle all my life and there’s no way I can do magic. I once called the attention of Professor Dumbledore so he can let me in at the Hogwarts School of Wizardry so I can become one of them. Fortunately, an owl came at night with an invitation to Hogwarts, and I can still vividly remember how happy I was heading to the platform 3/4. At first, I felt awkward because those pure blood wizards stared at me like I was a dirty little boy, but thank goodness because I also met other muggles like Hermione Granger and she comforted me and even sat beside me at one of the compartments of Hogwarts Express.

Anyways, I was bored and would like to practice some of my magical skills, but I could not simply do it in the world of the muggles. At Hogwarts, I am a wizard, but in the human world, I am a normal person. Since it’s our break at school, there’s no way I could practice casting spells and making potions in the muggle world. I was so terrible at everything at school, although I have the determination and the patience and the enthusiasm, it’s difficult to turn muggles like me into a good wizard. So I decided to sneak into Hogsmeade. The problem was, unless you have the permit, no wizard is allowed to go to this wizarding village. I heard from a house elf that while wizards can’t go to Hogsmeade, everybody, and with everybody I mean including the muggles, can go to a Hogsmeade café which is located in South Korea!!!

Another problem was, my broomstick was broken, it was my bad because last semester, I went to try out for a Quidditch tournament, I felt like I was ready for it, but instead of catching the golden snitch, I hit on a lamppost and broke my broomstick and my nose, ugh!!! I have no choice but to commute like an ordinary person.

So I traveled to Daegu, South Korea to visit the Hogsmeade Café that the house elf was talking about. Apparently, this café is not in the Marauder’s map, so to add insult to the injury, I have to step a notch lower into the human level by using a Google’s Map so I can find the Hogsmeade café. The address of the café is at 경상북도 경산시 성암로12길 36-11. Since I was commuting, I checked the most convenient way to go there using the public transportation. The nearest Train station to the café is Sawol Station of the Daegu Subway. It was not difficult to ride a train at Daegu because there are only 4 subway lines, although I wish I could just Dissaparate to my destination, but I was too scared to try it because this may Apparate me to South Africa instead of South Korea.

So I decided to just go through the flow of public transportation to go to Hogsmeade Café. When I reached Sawol Station on Line number 2, I went to Exit 2, there’s a bus stop at the exit. I took Bus Number 100-1 and got off at Oksan Woobang Apartment which is just 5 stops away from Sawol Station.

When I got off from the bus, the street reminded of Privet Drive where Harry Potter lives. It’s a quiet neighborhood, there were few people in the area that time and clean street. But Hogsmeade café is nowhere in the vicinity. I was tempted to use my magical powers to locate the café, but I was very careful. I walked one more block from the bus stop, I passed a building which looks like an elementary school, and then I crossed the street. And then in one small corner beside the school, I found the Hogsmeade café waiting for my arrival. It’s a small café with a very interesting design. When I saw it, it was……magical!!!

The Hogsmeade Cafe in Daegu

So I went inside the café, the barista slash the owner was sitting in the common room of the Gryffindor. There were two customers obliviously talking to each other and I barged in with my usual “annyeong haseyo” greetings. The barista, probably in his mid to late 20s welcomed me with a charming smile. But his presence was overshadowed by the familiar things I saw inside the café. One of the eye catchers in the café is the replica of the Gryffindor common room. There’s a big banner which says Gryffindor, a cloak, scarf, sorting hat and even harry Potter’s eyeglass. There’s also a fireplace which for me looks like a Floo network.

The Gryffindor common room inside the cafe

Each house has been represented in the café. There’s a banner for Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin, but Gryffindor stands out. There’s also Nimbus 2000, wands, and pen which reminds me of Rita Skeeter. Other memorabilia relating to Harry Potter like cards, marauders map and potions are magically displayed inside the café to awe every potterhead who visits the place.

Wearing my Gryffindor cloak and scarf with wand and potion

My first question to the barista slash the owner was, “are you a harry potter fan?”, yeah it was a silly question because the obvious answer was YES. He said that the wands, the broomstick and other stuff inside the café were made by his father. He conceptualized the Harry Potter themed café because he loves the novel, and he is a barista, so the café is a fusion of his passion.

The cafe counter

There’s a butterbeer in the menu, but because I couldn’t drink beer, I was so sorry I have to skip that. For my beverage, I had Kiwi smoothie. I also ordered Cheese Soufle and Choco Choco. There are few selections of coffee too and a lot of sweet treats, but for the benefit of my sugar intake, I have to be contented with what I ordered. I only paid 15,000 KRW for my food, a price quite reasonable for a themed café.

Kiwi smoothie, cheese soufle and choco choco

The ambiance is very wizardy and cozy. I was wearing the Gryffindor cloak all the time while inside the café. It was dimly lit making it looks like a chamber or a dungeon plus the walls and ceilings are bringing the Hogwarts feel. I must say that the interior design was carefully planned to make it look and feel like a dungeon. There are also clips from Daily Prophets posted in every corner of the café. It really reminds me of the Hogsmeade.

Daily Prophet news clips on the wall

As much as I wanted to stay for long, I have to go back home that afternoon. It may not perfectly resemble to the real Hogsmeade, but at least this café will satisfy your Harry Potter cravings. If you are a potterhead and you are in Korea, you must visit this café!

Christian Couple Ardy Roberto and Miriam Quiambao Inspire Filipino Migrants at the Men and Women's Conference in Korea

The attendees of the conference with the speakers Bro. Ardy Roberto and Sis. Miriam Quiambao-Roberto

It’s been said that living in a foreign land is never easy. Needless to say that people working overseas are heroes in their own right for the sacrifices and the setbacks they’re trying to conquer while being away from home. Every Filipino working abroad is going through adversities, and Filipinos in South Korea are not exempted. Just like other OFWs, Filipino migrants in Korea are also dealing with homesickness, longing for their respective partners in the Philippines, missing their kids, their parents and friends and relatives. It is at this state when giving up to temptations and worldly pleasures are easy options. That is why despite the challenge of distance, we must need to protect ourselves against the worldly things that could not only damage us but also our relationship with family, friends and relatives.

For these reasons and more, three churches in South Korea have collaborated to conduct Men and Women’s Conference 2017 as part of the E12 Intentional Discipleship Ministry program. The conference dealt head-on with the way of the world and how we tend to rationalize and justify some wrong doings just so we can jump on to the bandwagon. The conference was attended by a total of 108 Filipino migrants from Sinwoldong Sungkyul Church Foreign Ministry (SSCFM), LOGOS Korea and Christ Commission Ministry (CCM). It was held at the Bears Town Ski Resort in Pocheon last January 27 and 28, 2017. The speakers for this conference were Entrepreneur and Author Bro. Ardy Roberto and his wife, 1999 Miss Universe 1st Runner Up Miriam Quiambao-Roberto.

The couple shares their inspiring life and love story

The conference started Friday evening; everyone braved the nippy weather to the venue just to attend the event. The conference room was fully occupied by the excited attendees. To warm up the hearts and minds, a prayer with hearty and moving praise and worship led by SSCFM music team opened the program of the night. The conference was capped with Bro. Ardy and Sis. Miriam’s personal testimonies.  After dealing with their individual hardships in love and life, God has made the world conspired to make sure that they will end up in each other’s arms. The conference followed a simultaneous storytelling of their individual lives up to the point where circumstances led them together. It was not simply a true to life storytelling, but a bible verse inspired story. Everybody was blessed that night because of the inspiring story of the couple. It is true indeed that nothing will go wrong if you will just pray and commit it all to God.

Attendees from different churches attentively listening to the speakers

The couple also talked about how they dealt with the struggles of keeping the purity between them. They set boundaries just to make sure that they are not doing what unmarried couples are doing nowadays. This part of their testimony made us realized that just because everybody is doing it doesn’t mean it is right. The irony of it all is that, if wrong deeds become too mainstream, you will feel outdated and out of place if you will not do it too. Let’s say for example the pre-marital sex. We all know it’s wrong, but because almost all unmarried couples are doing it, you are not cool if you will not do it too. As a Christian, we ought to do what is always right, because we are here not to please the people but the God that we believe in.

Congregational Prayer

Concluding the night, the couple prayed for everybody in the room. It was a moment of great renewal of spiritual commitment and pouring out the struggles and also the praises to the Lord. Lastly, the couple signed the books that the attendees purchased from them. They also graced the photo taking session despite their tiredness.

On the second day of the conference, the attendees were divided into two groups. One group is for men and the other group is for women. Bro. Ardy Roberto was the speaker for the men’s group. He talked about integrity and he taught how a person could become a man of integrity. At the end of it all, everybody wrote their pledge on a piece of paper to commit to become the man of integrity. Here are some of the reflections of the attendees from the men’s group:

Love your wife....avoid temptation...be a Man of God...Man of integrity...at higit sa lahat laging maging POGI. - Bro. Jasper De Ocampo

Jeorge Guillera
.
Sis. Miriam Quiambao-Roberto, on the other hand, led the session for the women’s group. She encouraged the women to become prayerful and always ask the Lord for guidance to follow His will. Here are some of the reflections of the attendees:

*Ang pagkakaroon po ng deep relationship of God
*Pagkakaroon po ng matatag n faith sa ating Panginoon.
*Matutong laging mnalangin at hingiin lagi ang gabay ng Panginoon sa bawat hakbang or desisyon sa ating buhay
*Lagi po nating ipagkatiwala at ilatag sa Panginoon ang ating anumang mga problems o pgsubok sa ating buhy huwag po tayong mgsawang mnalangin.. – Sis Mheey De Real

Women are hot! 1. Have a Heart for God~ Prov. 23:26 I should live inlove to my Savior Jesus Christ, but I can't say that I love God without obeying His word, 2. Obey~Exodus 19:5. If I want God to bless me I should obey what He wants me to do. Obedience equals blessings. 3. Trust ~proverbs 3:5~6 I will trust Him and I won't lean on my own understanding bec. I am nothing without God. When I accepted God not only my Savior also my Lord. So I should let Him lead my life daily. Eto po ang akin. I prayed to God these 3 points will manifest in my heart. In Jesus name I pray Amen. – Sis Cindy Yusi

Ang magkaroon tau ng oras para s pananalangin at tamang lugar. Manalangin s Panginoon khit maliit o sa malalaking desisyon. – Sis Bheng

Yes!. ..I was really touched by her testimony...until now di aq maka move on...un transformation sa kanya ng Panginoon grabe!..Napakabisa tlaga ng prayer...from her testimony, prayer ang naging solution sa lahat ng pinagdaanan niya and nakita naman sa kanya ang naging bunga ng mga panalangin nya...indeed, when we fully surrendered ourselves to God babaguhin at babaguhin Niya tayo until maging kawangis Niya...magkakaroon tayo ng contentment and ung dati nating ginagawa na nagpapasaya sa atin magiging boring na because inilagay na ng Diyos sa ating mga puso ang tunay na joy na nagmumula sa Kanya lamang.kaya naman un sinasabi ni sis Mirriam sa testimony na boyfriend niya si Lord at nararamdaman niya na nanliligaw sa Kanya si Lord..for me, totoo un .kapag talaga naka focus tyo kay Jesus alone maraming kamangha manghang bagay ang ipaparanas sa tin ang Diyos ...Because sis Mirriam was obeyed God, naghaharvest na siya ngayon ng mga blessings..Kaya naman ang challenge sa kin ngayon ,..pray consistently ...and fully surrender myself to God ...I really thank God for the life of sis Mirriam...she encouraged us na walang tunay na kasiyahan without Jesus in our lives...Thank you po sis Mirriam...more souls to win..God bless.. – Sis Len De Ocampo

Her testimony is really challenging and inspiring. No one and nothing can fill the emptiness of our heart and soul. The more we want something for ourselves lalo taung mawawalan, but when we desire to be filled with His presence and to be a woman of God, He will give us beyond our requests and anticipations. But we should fully surrender ourselves first. And ask Him to give us a heart na laging in luv na in luv s Kanya through our consistent and constant prayer. Entrust and submit everything to Him. And pray na minsan is prng imposible ung mga ngyayari katulad ng pgbulong s knya ng Lord s pangalan ni Bro.Ardy to be her husband... But it was real, nothing is impossible to God. Just believe and have faith in Him. – Sis Ana Kim

Ung reflection ko po sa testimony ni Sis Miriam natotonan ko walang sinumang ma pride na tao ang pinagpapala ni Lord. Because Jesus Christ is the model of humbleness kaya we should humble ourselves before He bless us And we can't obey and submit to anyone if we don't have a humble heart kaya unang una dapat un ang ma change sa puso natin bago freely natin matanggap whatever commands and will God wanted for me to follow.
Pangalawa matotong makinig sa answer ni Lord to what we prayed for. Hindi ung nagppray but we have something in our mind na gusto na or nka plan (same sa list of ideal person ni Sis Miriam) dapat wag ng mag ask kay Lord kung nka set na sa mind natin ung gusto natin kasi matatagalan lang ung process, at si Lord lang din nman ang masusunod at ma disappoint lang tayo.
Once we asked God for His will, let it be and let God to decide. Kasi nga po He answers our prayer more than to what we deserve. And I have testimonies narin mga kapatid how God answered my prayers more than to what I expect..Hindi lingid sa inyo ang buhay eps at 2x na panganganak ko, sa early na paglabas ni Rak, still i sincere pa ako ng samunim ko. To God be the glory. – Sis Rima Felizardo

Napaka timely & laking challenge for me to trust God 101%.. Not to worry what lies ahead .. set aside "my SELF" Not my own will but His will.. Not my dreams but His plans ... That all will fall into place with His perfect plan and time. But I want to start with my heart desire to have a CONSISTENT INTIMATE-prayer life and time with God.. i want to hear God's voice.. loud and clear.. Esp. in making life-changing decisions ahead us..
Ang ganda nga sinabi niya, humble down.. Obey.. Submit to husband as we submit to God.. fall inlove with God.. That feeling na masaya at excited lagi makausap at makapag spend ng time sa Kanya.. Mag devotion at gumawa ng journal..(kaya from today i long to have that "inlove" feeling with the Lord)
The way Sis. Miriam shared her testimony .. Indeed! You can feel kung paano kumilos ang Panginoon sa buhay niya..
P.s
and also that we can share our own testimony on how God touched our hearts & changed us inside-out that may inspire, bless others and get to know Jesus Christ.
Blessed day ahead!     - Sis Khaye Tuazon

!Be Humble alwayz specially to our Lord kc hindi natin kayang lumapit sa panginoon kung tayo ay mataas at hindi natin kayang magpakumbaba...Obey all commands of God and trust in the Lord with all ur heart and lean not ur own understanding!wag tyong manangan sa sarili nating kakayanan at kylangan ipagpray natin ky Lord lahat ng plano at gusto natin sa buhay...at pinaka the best is prayer un talaga ang kylangan natin sa buhay natin is prayer...Kylangan s prayer natin is always God's will not our own will...and i always pray to the Lord na patuloy na bigyan tyo ng wisdom pra malaman natin ung will ng Lord pra sa mga prayers natin kung ano man un?Glory to God.... – Sis Crizel

May bagong inspiration akong nkuha. Waiting upon God's best but in the time of waiting mahalin ang Panginoon ng buong puso at isipan. – Sis Darlyn

After the conference, there was an awarding of certificate to the graduates of the E12 Discipleship Ministry. It was awarded by the respective pastors of the different churches with the speakers Bro. Ardy Roberto and Sis. Miriam Quiambao-Roberto.

Everybody was blessed with what they learned from the conference. It was indeed a very meaningful and memorable event for all the attendees. And as what Pastor Jerry Yusi said, the Men and Women’s conference was the BEST, it is Beautiful, Enlightening, Spiritual and Thought Provoking.

Loving Korea More Together With "LOVING KOREA"

There are a lot of reasons why a lot of people around the globe love Korea. There’s the Hallyu wave or Korean wave that entices the world with the kpop music, drama and movies. There’s Korean food that gained the interest of the gastronomic because it is unique and deeply rooted to the culture of Korea. And of course, there’s the culture that every culture vulture aspire to delve into. For these reasons and more, Korea is a country that you would really love to LOVE, and a newly founded community called LOVING KOREA capitalizes on this idea.

LOVING KOREA is a travel group founded and administered by three Korean wanderlusts. The goal of the group is to reveal the hidden treasures of Korea, and by hidden treasures they mean some valuable aspects of Korea that the locals and the foreigners must know.

SaranghaeKorea meets LovingKorea
(c) LOVINGKOREA

Out of the several trips that Loving Korea had organized, I was able to attend two. The first was the Korean Traditional Medicine Tour and the Second was the Korean War Memorial Tour. I can say that what this group can offer is different from the others because I can feel the sincerity from them as tour guides. The first time I attended a tour, I felt like I was connected with the group because LOVING KOREA is just a direct translation of the name of my blog “SARANGHAE KOREA”. It was a coincidence; nevertheless, it’s a string that attached us. So I decided to meet up with Jun Seok, Jaemin and Young Jin to know more about LOVING Korea. In this interview, we will know about the people behind LOVING KOREA and the story behind this.

One of the many activities organized by Loving Korea last summer
(c) LovingKorea

HOW DID IT START?

The concept of LOVING KOREA started when a young Korean guy named Jun Seok Jung posted his idea of organizing such group on Couchsurfing. The idea came to him after his travel experience in Latin America.

Jun Seok: “While I was travelling in Latin America, I was thinking that to see local things is really nice for the foreigners”

So when he arrived in Korea after his Latin America trip, he posted on Couchsurfing about the idea and Jaemin Song, another Korean guy, saw the post and commented that he was interested to help materialize the idea. Jaemin’s decision to join Jun Seok in organizing a travel group was influenced by what he discovered during his 6 months trip in Europe.

Jaemin: “Some locals don’t know about their place, and I was shocked. I was thinking about myself too if I know more about Seoul”

Jaemin talked about how people in Korea, both the tourists and the locals, always go to the same famous tourists spots. He wants to show that aside from the mainstream places, there are a lot to see in Korea. As he and Jun Seok were both looking on the same page after that brief conversation on couchsurfing, they immidiately arranged a meeting and prepared to organize the tour.

Jun Seok:“We first decided to research about Seongbokdung, visited the place, see the best route, etc.”

Another member of the team, Young Jin joined Jaemin and Junseok because he was inspired by Jaemin’s travelogue. He believed in the advocacy of the two guys to introduce Korea to the people and make people love Korea even more.

Young Jin: “I want to really make good image about Korea, that’s why I started to join. I want to erase the bad image that Koreans made when I lived in Texas”

Why did you choose the name LOVING KOREA?

LOVING KOREA is a name coined by Jun Seok since he was the one started the idea. It’s just a simple name of the group, but for Jun Seok, he chose this for a reason.

Jun Seok: “While I was in Latin America and other countries, other people asked me about Korea but I couldn’t answer because I don’t know about Korea. So I said maybe I need to start this project to make people love Korea including myself, so I named it LOVING KOREA”

When Young Jin joined the group, he was not comfortable with the name.

Young Jin:“At first I thought the name is boring, but after joining and doing a lot of activities, it’s ok”

The aim of the group is to make other people and the locals to love Korea, and the Koreans.

What are the challenges you encountered so far in organizing the trips and tours?

At first, the three guys thought that the plan was easy. They realized that organizing a tour requires a lot of time and effort to make it successful. After the brainstorming, they were able to come up with the idea of organizing four walking tours just within the Seoul area.

Jaemin explained that they decided to introduce the Seongbokgung first, it’s a village in Seoul that shows the old Korea. Second, they organized a Medicine tour together with the folk museum tour, this kind of tour is all about Korean traditional medicine and academic. Third, a war museum tour, to introduce about Korean war and its effect nowadays especially the military duty. And last, the Core Korea which is all about the language, character and religion. For the Core Korea, they organized trip to Jongnyo Shrine, Hangeul Museum and even in Chinatown in Incheon.

The challenge of organizing the tour did not end at deciding for the theme and the places to visit. For them, there are a lot of struggles and difficulties that they encountered and conquered.

Young Jin: “It’s really tough for me actually because I am not really interested about the traditional Korea. Whenever I remember it, I couldn’t memorize, that’s why I couldn’t guide well. I can’t explain about the things because I don’t have many knowledge”

Jaemin: “We met a lot of obstacles, first is money, we meet several times to have meeting. We meet more than 30 hours per week on vacation. Since we have no funding, we spend our own money.  Second problem is with discovering local places for the foreigners. It’s hard to distinguish what is hidden that people want to know and hidden but people don’t want to know. Some culture is very deep but nobody knows because nobody wants to know. It’s hard to think in a foreigner’s view.”

Jun Seok:“The challenge for me was to learn new things. “

Junseok has to learn how to do video editing after his friend quitted Loving Korea. He learned it by himself. For him, everything was a first time including Video editing, photoshop and blog and managing facebook page.

What’s your most memorable trip with LOVING KOREA?

Jaemin explaining about Korean alphabet

Young Jin:“I think Core Korea. I think the Hangeul was very good because Jaemin was very good at it. A lot of people were moved by the way he guided."

Visiting an old village as part of Time Machine tour
(c) LovingKorea

Jaemin: “My most memorable tour is Time machine to Korea. It was my first tour. We invited people by Facebook and it was our first try to guide and everybody loved it. I still remember we kept checking the route and what kind of explanation we have to edit.”

Summer Activities at Ganghwado
(c) LovingKorea

Jun Seok:” I visited Ganghwado. I watched a TV show about Ganghwado and they show about one hidden place and they were making local things. They have program on how to make flower pancake. I visited the place with my parents. Then I decided to make a tour with Loving Korea. We first visited, then made a tent at 33 degrees, then the next day we visited again. We visited several times. It was interesting because it was our first time to build a tent under the heat of the sun.”

What do you think Loving Korea could offer that other travel groups couldn’t?

Jaemin: “The biggest point is we show them different places like Medicine museum. In our tour we edit our opinion, it’s not fact but our opinion and even more interesting.”

Young Jin: “ Our identity is to find hidden aspects to Korea for the people. We make a course, what place is good and attractive. We usually check all information and a lot of story and we want to make them lasts. We always search interesting story and not just boring information. We always make them comfortable, we have dinner together and just hang out.”

Jun Seok:“From the starting point up to now, there are many changes and obstacles that we didn’t expect. We are doing things as a guide and events. The most important thing is that we are Koreans, we say our opinions. I cannot know what you really want to do. I show first something as a Korean. Then second thing, we just didn’t tell a story, we share the story just like a friend with our own opinion.”

What are your standards in selecting places to visit?

Jaemin: “Guiding has to have a theme. If we don’t have a theme, it’s not like a tour, it’s just like walking. First we go to the places, sit and see what’s common things we could see from there. That’s how we make travel plans.”

Jun Seok:“The first point is that, it should be interesting. I visited many cities and Insadong many times, but if I will try to look at things in different, then it looks different.”

Young Jin:“Like what Jaemin mentioned, we have a theme. Since we are Koreans, we have some complaints about Korean things, or we can tell story which is interesting. If we feel it’s interesting, then it could be interesting to them. If we feel it’s an attractive topic, then we choose that.”
Jun Seok: “we first decide a topic, we search and then we visit. “

What impression would you like to leave to the people?

Jaemin:” I will tell people that Korea is not Seoul. I want to tell like some small parts, I want to make people realize about different Korea. I want to tell people that what you can see in the touristy place is not everything. “

Young Jin:“In my case, to give a really good image about Korea. I think I want to have an image from them that I can be a friend with people very easily.”

Jun Seok: “Two Things. 1. That they enjoy it. 2. I want them to see that at least they see something different.”

The National Pension System (NPS) of Korea or KUKMIN (국민) is one of the benefits that some foreign workers can avail while working in South Korea. Once the tenure in this country is over, you can get the lump sum of your contribution and bring it home.

If you want to update or check your Kukmin contribution, there are a lot of ways to do so, but I guess the easiest way is to use the NPS Kukmin app which you can download freely. Just search for the App called NPS, the logo should look like this:

CHECKPOINT: You must have an online banking account to use this app. This app will require your Certificate Number for Online Banking to show your Kukmin record. If you don’t have Online bank account, you can’t use this app.

Provided that you have an online banking account, here’s how to use the app:

     1.       Open the NPS app
     2.       Tap 개인전자민원 (the big magnifying glass icon besides NPS icon)

     3.       Then tap 가입내역주회

     4.       You will get the login page. Enter your Alien Card Number and click the green button to login.

     5.       The next page will show your Certificate Number for online banking, just click it an then enter your Certificate Password (provided by your bank when you applied for online banking)

That’s it, you will now see your kukmin latest contribution.

Make Extraordinary Adventures with Trickeye Museum’s AR and VR Features

Our favorite art gallery in Hongdae is now more interactive and fun with its new features, the AR or augmented reality and the VR or Virtual Reality! My last visit at the Trickeye Museum was a fun and memorable one as we interacted with 2D paintings giving impressions that we were part of the artwork.

Last week, I visited Trickeye Museum again together with friends, and I was so surprised with the new elements they have added in the museum. It’s a whole new level of fun and adventures, yes, you read it right, an adventure at Trickeye Museum. Before, visitors can only take photos with 3D effects, now, people can make videos of the artwork with special effects. This is the first and only museum in the world with AR.

With the Augmented reality feature, I tried to escape the lava attack!

Fought the fire breathing sea monster! The good thing about the app is that, it has embedded sound effects already, no matter how noisy the people around you, it will not be recorded because the default sound effect is that of the sound of the animation.

Saved a friend from the mouth of a big monster fish! Using a third party video editor, you can also add your own music background just like this one.

Enjoyed the fireworks!

And the flying flowers!

And a lot more!!!

So how this augmented reality works?

Well, it’s easy, all you need to do is download the Trickeye app on your respective devices. Just search for the app called “TRICKEYE”, then download it, it’s an app with a red and white camera icon.

Once you opened the application, you must connect to the wifi to make it work. Don’t worry, the museum has a Free wifi for everybody, so you can just connect and use the app. All you need to do is to focus the trickeye app camera in front of any 2D paintings available in the museum, make sure that the AR mode is turned ON, and then wait for the effect to come out. You can turn ON/OF AR mode by touching AR:T button (located between "video" and "photo" button).

Forget about taking 2D photos, because with the Trickeye app, you can make cool and interactive video. You need to muster all the acting skills you have to react with the video effect to make it even more realistic.

If you are not comfortable with the videos, you can actually take photos with the effect, in the Trickeye app, you can switch between Photos and Videos, it’s all up to you really. If you want to know more about using the Trickeye App, you can CLICK HERE.

Not only that, another feature added was the VR or the Virtual Reality. In this part of the museum, you can ride a virtual roller coaster, sing your heart out at the virtual “The voice” stage with the Monster VR, explore the wilderness without leaving the vicinity of the museum, and get some adrenaline rush at the racing games.

The VR really attracts a lot of visitors especially the young people because people can get to experience a different level of fun brought by the virtual effects. To know more a about the virtual reality feature, you can CLICK HERE.

I don’t know what else can Trickeye Museum do in the future, but as for what I experienced during my visit, I guess the museum set a higher level of fun and excitement when it comes to optical and virtual illusions. So if you want to experience this yourself, go visit Trickeye Museum at Hongdae in Seoul. For complete direction on how to go to Trickeye Museum, CLICK HERE. And oh by the way, make sure your smart phone’s battery is full, bring extra batteries and/or power banks so you have an unlimited opportunity to record your adventures at Trickeye Museum.

15 Signs na Nilamon Ka Na ng Sistema ng Kdrama

For me, if there are three best things that Korea contributed to the world, I think they are Samsung, Kpop and Kdrama. It’s good enough that despite the language barrier, their music and TV series were able to penetrate to Western audiences, other Asian countries and the whole world. That is why they have this thing called Hallyu Wave because they have markets in the global field especially the Korean TV series.

The Kdrama, as what people call it, have been well accepted by the viewers especially in the Philippines. I can’t count how many Korean dramas have been translated into Filipino and landed into Philippine TV networks. As much as we hate to think that they are better than our own locally produced TV shows, we can’t deny the fact that Filipinos are going gaga over Kdramas and we can’t blame them for that. In fact, Filipinos are so into it that ultimate fanboys and fangirls dream to go and live in South Korea.

So how to know if a fan already went overboard admiring Korean Dramas? Here’s a list of signs na nilamon ka na ng sistema ng Kdrama.

      1.       You’ve acquired those bulging eyebags not because of your thesis or assignment, nag binge watching ka lang ng Goblin all night long. Huwag ako besh, wag ako! LOL

2.       You have ultimate collections of Kdramas merchandises that you can make a bed out of it. Pillows, posters, photos and more photos, name it, and you have them. Malay mo, yong picture ni Song joongki that you treasured so much, nabubuhay pag gabi. Baka lang naman.

      3.       Pupunta ka ng Korea hindi para puntahan ang mga tourist attractions, balak mo lang talagang puntahan yong mga Filming locations.

    7.       Everytime you see a poster, standfie, billboard or anything related to kdrama, hindi pwedeng hindi ka magpapapicture, with matching tili pa.

A Cool Journey to the Underworld at Gwangmyeong Cave

Fantasy Movie Festival inside the cave

If Bruce Wayne has a man cave that houses sophisticated items like the batmobile, batcomputer station, a vault of Batman’s costume and other unspecified machineries, South Korea has Gwangmyeong Cave to top it all. Well, maybe not in the aspect of sophistication, but at least it’s a real cave with real things in it. Do you want to know what these real things are? Let me virtually tour you inside the cave.

Unlike any other caves, you don’t need to trek on high mountains or go to wherever forest in the far-flung provinces to access Gwangmyeong cave because it can be found right within the city. Yes folks, it’s a cave in the city. It was used to be a coal mining site and it has witnessed the colonization of Japanese as well as the evolution of the modern industries in Korea. The Korea Tourism decided to transform the cave into a museum and historical site and it was reopened in 2011 for public visit.
In the outside, it looks like just any other ordinary cave. For me, it doesn’t even look like a cave, it looks like a tunnel. Here in Korea, if you travel from one city to another, you would definitely pass through a lot of tunnels. Essentially, these are passageways built through the mountains. But Gwangmyeong was not built for a tunnel but as a mining site in the early 20th century.

There are other elements outside the cave referencing to what it used to be. There’s a statue of a miner with a cart of gold. Of course, these are not real gold, they put this just to show that they used to excavate gold from these mining sites a long long time ago.

Statue of a miner with  cart of gold outside the cave

Also, there’s a viewing cave on the other side. It’s some kind of an elevated area, so if you want to view city on the top view, you must climb up the wooden stair to reach the sky view. Well, there’s not much to see up there except for buildings and trees, but it’s worth a try and a climb.

Sky View

I was not prepared for the exotic experience I had inside the cave. It was cold inside, well lit and there were old photos displayed almost every 10 meters in the entrance area to show how the tunnel looked like during the era when it was still a mining site. For a second, I was confused if it’s a cave or a museum, but we can call it a cave-museum.

Museum inside the cave

I like how they made the lightings more interesting inside the cave. It’s so colorful and beautiful. There were LED of different colors, shapes and sizes adding mystery to the ambiance inside. I felt like I was transported into the future, where creatures are glowing and emitting bright and colorful lights.

LED lights everywhere

But what really amazed me was the fact that there’s a music and art hall inside. There’s this one area where you can see a stage, chairs for the audience, projectors and a lot more. Apparently, they hold performances in this area to entertain visitors of the cave. It looks like a theater house for me, better than the theater house I think. But wait, there’s more, we were actually treated for a show. It’s not just an ordinary show because the hall was suddenly converted into a magical room as the walls of the cave turned into a movie screen. It was some sort of a short movie with colors and shadows as actors telling a story about what the humanity has done to the environment as they aim for industrial development.

The walls inside the cave turned into a colorful show

And who would have thought you can install a giant aquarium inside the cave? I kid you not, fishes are no longer in the sea, they’re at Gwangmyeong cave too. It was a little bit a strange sight for me, but apparently, people were actually enjoying it.  Fishes of different species and sizes and colors were there happily swimming in the aquarium.

one part of the giant aquarium inside the cave

There’s also a golden path, it’s a tunnel where all you see and touch are gold. I felt I was a King when I walked in that path. Everything in the golden path is shimmering and shining like gold.
At the end of the path runs a waterfall, a golden waterfall! And there are golden palaces too that make the place even more interesting.

The golden path

Other interesting elements in the cave were the wishing stations. Every now and then, there’s a statue, or some kind of lucky charms or even wishing well where people can touch and pray for whatever fortune they want in life, it could be money, prosperity, happiness, etc…. One example of these is this golden statue of Aisha. They said that if you touch the pieces of gold sitting in her hand, you will have a prosperous and happy future.

The statue of Aisha

One part of the cave is dedicated to Fantasy Movie Festival and they have coordinated with the Weta Workshop, the producer of “The Lord of the Rings”. So don’t be surprised if you’ll see the giant sculpture of Smaug and Gollum, I was surprised though.

Lord of The Ring

Not only that, there’s a garden inside!!! Plants of different varieties and species are displayed to give some lush green sight for the visitors. It’s quite refreshing to see the greeneries in the dark cold tunnel of the cave.

Garden inside the cave

I guess the highlight of our little trip at Gwangmyeong was a visit to the Winery or they call it a Wine Cave. We got to taste the wine of different types and it tastes so good. It’s like all the good wines in the world were gathered and……ok fine, I really don’t know anything about wine, haha… I was just impressed by the collections of wine available inside the cave.

The winery

I like how the staffs were so polite and they always make sure that everybody’s safe inside the cave. We were a little bit in a hurry because they will be closing the cave at 6 pm, but I can’t believe we were able to explore the whole area in just maybe about 3 hours.

So if you are looking for a daytrip, Gwangmyeong cave is the best place to visit because it is very accessible by public transportation. It is located at 142 Gahak-ro 85beon-gil, Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do or you can take a subway and get off at Gwangmyeong Station on Line Number 1. Go to exit 6 and take a taxi to Gwangmyeong cave. It will take around 10 minutes to reach the cave from the subway station. The cave is open from 9 in the morning up to 6 in the evening during weekdays and 9pm during weekends. The cave is closed every Monday, Seollal and Chuseok.

work in manufacturing industry

IMPORTANT NOTICE: As you can see, this blogpost has been flooded with questions. I could no longer answer questions here. If you have questions, CLICK HERE to see if it has been answered in the FAQ. If not, just leave your question in the comment box of that page.

A lot of people commenting on my blogposts and emailing me asking “How to apply as a factory worker in Korea?”. and although I am not authorized to hire people to work here in Korea, I feel obligated as a blogger to share the information on how people in the Philippines apply as a factory worker here. Interested applicant must go through the process of EPS or Employment Permit System.

So here’s a guide for everyone out there who are interested to work in a manufacturing industry. This is based on the agreement between the Ministry of Employment and Labor of the Republic of Korea (MOEL) and the Department of Labor and Employment of the Philippines with regards to the MOU on the Sending of Workers.

There are three rounds you must pass in order to be hired as Factory worker in South Korea. Every round has corresponding points, and the points that you will acquire along the way will help you open the door of opportunity to South Korea. So what are these three rounds?

First Round: Korean Language Test

For the information of everybody, EPS-TOPIK exam is a selection criteria for jobseekers in Korea. This is a Korean language test to ensure that foreign workers who hope to work in Korea are equipped with Korean language skills. One must pass the exam first before being considered for the second step.

The announcement of EPS-TOPIK is usually posted in the POEA website (www.poea.gov.ph). There is no definite date of posting of announcement. While waiting for the announcement, I recommend you start learning Korean language. You need to pass the exam in order to be listed in the roster of applicants.

For the qualifications, please check the list below:

·         Must be 18 years of age and not more than 38 years old on the next EPS-TOPIK exam date
·         Must be physically and mentally fit
·         Must not have any record of conviction or imprisonment
·         Must not have any record of deportation or departure orders from the Republic of Korea
·         Registered with active status in the POEA Manpower Registry

Registration venues will soon be posted.

What to Bring for registration:

·         Valid passport or valid governmaent-issued Identification Card with picture and date of birth such as SSS, GSIS, Driver’s License or Voter’s ID
·         Two (2) pcs. passport size colored picture showing a full face with no hat and taken not more than six (6) months before registration
·         Registration/Test fee – US $24 or Php1,044.00. (previous exam)

Go to the respective testing venue on a specified date on the announcement and take the EPS-TOPIK exam. You must pass the exam, if not, you cannot work as a factory worker in Korea.

The exam is consists of two types, the Listening and the Reading. There are 25 items for listening and 25 items also for reading.  You must answer that in 70 minutes. Test type is multiple choice.

You will be informed about the date of the announcement of test result. All you need to do is wait (usually about 7 days) for the announcement which can be found on POEA website. Once you see your name on the passer’s list, you can now submit the requirements to POEA. Please note that passing the exam does not guarantee employment, but basically, you are halfway there.

Second Round: Skills Test

Once you see your name on the passers’ list, report to POEA in your area immediately. You must bring the photocopy and original copy of the following:

1. WORK EXPERIENCE/ CERTIFICATE OF EMPLOYMENT
2. LICENSED CERTIFICATE (NATIONAL)
3. VOCATIONAL TRAINING CERTIFICATE MULA SA TESDA O SA TESDA ACCREDITED
TRAINING CENTERS

The POEA will advice you to take the Skills test. Venue and date will be announced. The skills test will further measure your ability to speak and understand Korean Language. It's actually an interview using Korean as a medium of communication.

In this test, you will also receive instructions in Korean and you must do what is asked by the interviewer to pass this test. Commands, like arranging things, identifying colors, lifting objects and whatnot, will be asked in Korean language and you must do it all perfectly.

Third Round: Certifications

The certifications from your previous job experience can gain you more points for this opportunity. If you have no work experience, you can still be listed in a roster as long as you passed round 1 and round 2, but certifications will earn you the following points:

Work Experience (1 year and more) : 3 points
Licensed Certificate (1 year and more): 1 point
Vocational Training Certificate (1 year and more): 1 point

The employers in South Korea will choose the name in the roster based on the points gathered by the hopeful applicants. So it is important you have accumulated good amount of points every round.

How much does it cost?

From the POEA website, you can also see the breakdown of the cost you need to pay for processing.

In peso, it is approximately PHP35,000.

That’s it. It’s not rocket science. You just need patience and the guts. For more information about working here in Korea in general, you may want to check my other posts regarding the current minimum wage for factory workers in Korea, type of jobs in manufacturing industry and a lot more HERE

A Tree of 30,000 Shoes at Seoullo 7017

a tree of 30000 shoes

Where do broken shoes go? Do you give them away? Throw them away? Or just keep it!

Well, in Seoul, environmental artist Hwang Ji-hae has created a place for all well-used, broken and over-used shoes in Korea. They call this a Shoes Tree and it is currently installed at the Seoullo 7017. Ever wonder what’s the significance of this tree made of 30,000 shoes for Seoullo 7017? There are two major reasons, not that I know any other reasons, but for all of you skeptical, here are the significant factors of this shoes tree at Seoullo 7017.

For a start, Seoullo 7017 means Seoul Road 7017. In Korean, the suffix lo(로) is a direction article which is primarily used for methods, transport, tools, places and destination. Since Seoul is a place, when you say a road in Seoul or By the Seoul, you can say Seoullo. Ok enough for Korean language class! The 7017 means the two significant years for Seoullo. It was built in 1970, but it was declared dangerous in 2006 due to its old age, it was reconstructed and finally turned into a skyway park in 2017, hence the numbers 7017. But what does the Shoes Tree mean for Seoullo 7017?

A skywalk park called Seoullo 7017

Firstly, Seoul 7017 is a skywalk, meaning, it’s a walking lane in the sky. And what do people usually do in a walking lane? They either walk or run. When you walk or run, the most essential thing you should wear is a pair of shoes! It’s a no brainer. So the shoes tree is a reminder to get people for walking.

Second, the shoes tree is a tribute to the history of the place. There’s a street behind the Seoullo 7017 called Yeomcheon-gyeo which is famous for suppliers of handmade shoes. The shoes is a reminder that somewhere in the neighborhood, skillful Korean shoemakers used to exist and maybe still existing even up to these days.

It also helps that the artist is an environmentalist. He did not just recycle the used shoes, he also planted some plants and flowers inside the shoes and make it look like a little garden at the bottom of the tree. I just think it’s a genius idea.

The shoes

Like any other parks, Seoullo 7017 has its own amenities to be considered as a skyway park. They planted different varieties of plants to add a forest-y feel in the area. There are fountains which children really enjoy. There are also food booths where you can try kimbap and food made of flowers.

The plants at the skywalk

At some point of the skywalk, there are small glass floors too where you can step on and look down to the bottom where fast cars are running on the road.

Glass floors

The view of the city from the top is also quite remarkable. You can see the busy street of Seoul full of people and cars and whatnot.

View from Seoullo 7017 skywalk park

Will I consider Seoullo7017 a tourist spot? A park, yes! But a tourist spot? Hmmm… I don’t think so. I guess Koreans really do enjoy walking in the skywalk with their family, so maybe we can just leave this place for them to enjoy. Although it wouldn’t hurt to include this area in your itinerary and go there as a tourist, just don’t expect that much.

To go to Seoullo 7017, just take Seoul Subway and get off at Seoul Station. There are several access to the skywalk, but if you want to visit the Shoes Tree first, you can go to Exit 2 and you will smell it, I mean see it the moment you go out of the exit area.
